This monograph presents a theoretical hypothesis addressing the methodological need to explain in a unitary way the phenomena related, on the one hand, to social integration and, on the other, to social conflict. «Neither the coercion theory nor the integration theory of society succeeds in giving an autonomous characterization of “power” and establishing this concept as a primary sociological category.
A comprehensive sociological theory capable of explaining all social phenomena, hence both the phenomenon of integration and the phenomenon of conflict, must use concepts with a higher degree of abstraction than those underlying the integration theory and the coercion theory.
The more general element characterizing social interactions in the proper sense must be identified in the community of interests based on interrelation. The interrelation rests on the phenomenon of the integration of interests, which qualifies in structural terms any social group. It results from two complex and interdependent factors, which are the community of interests (such that interests can have common objects) and the interrelation between interests (such that interests can be the object of each other), and represents the fundamental element of cohesion of every social group.» IT
