G. Bolacchi, Teoria delle classi sociali, Edizioni Ricerche, Roma, 1963

«The first part of this book is devoted to a methodological analysis of the role of theory and abstract concepts in scientific research, with particular reference to the social sciences. The four subsequent parts address the problems relating to social classes from various perspectives. The analysis starts from the concept of “class” in some of the most representative scholars of contemporary sociology and moves on to the concepts of “interest” and “power,” which are the two paramount structural characterizations through which the phenomenon under investigation can be explicated. Finally, the problems related to democracy, whose importance for class theory cannot be questioned, are examined; in the last part, some concise considerations on the bourgeoisie are advanced.

The need to examine in depth the foundations of sociological theory has resulted, at times, in the problem of social classes taking a back seat. However, the latter is the guiding thread of the investigation, and even subject matters that could seem distant refer to it, directly or indirectly.

The need to provide conceptual tools with a broad theoretical scope, forming the basis for systematizing the complex phenomena of social reality in a unitary way, inspires the great emphasis (in part one) on issues related to methodology.» IT
